Commemorating the year of "THE ENDLESS WINTER"
There was no summer in 1816. Crops failed and the American people moved south to Pennsylvania and Ohio.
It was thought the endless winter was caused by sunspots, or perhaps the devil, but it was the eruption of Mount Tambora.
The cold damp weather forced the English poet Percy Shelly and Mary Shelly to sit around a fire one cold and dreary night with Lord Byron and friends. Percy suggested they make up ghost stores which resulted in Mary's novel Frankenstein, a story describing the year of "the endless winter".
